Many clients I see struggle with their mental health in specific ways. They are in distress and are confused about what to do. This distress can come from different places: a reaction to something which has happened, something happening in their body, or trauma to name a few. My personal philosophy is that a lot of the (non-trauma related) causes of distress in clients are existential in nature, meaning that they have their roots in the big questions of life. The way that I like to work with people is to start off by teaching coping strategies to try to stabilize that distress, before transitioning to deeper work processing the causes of that distress, including processing trauma.

I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) with a Master of Counselling Psychology from Adler University, and many years working in the mental health field before that. When I was 17, I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and I have what we call lived experience dealing with things like depression, anxiety, and other mental health concerns in my personal life. In addition to my Master’s degree, I have undertaken formal training in Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) and Brainspotting, which is a therapy designed to help process trauma. I have also received informal training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS).

I am practiced in attuning to my client’s emotional world to foster a safe, genuine and meaningful relationship upon which the therapeutic work can rest. Emotions are observed with curiosity, experienced safely and understood authentically. Leading with emotion allows individuals to challenge beliefs, patterns and coping strategies they no longer find helpful and move to toward a deeper sense of connection and purpose.
